“The seat of the pants salesman will never, ever match the income of the systemized salesman. The top producers live by systems” – Dan Kennedy
I bet everyone reading this has had a hamburger that tastes better than anything on the McDonalds menu. So it’s fair to say that McDonalds may not have the best hamburgers in the world right?
So why then do people invest several million dollars in a McDonalds franchise?
I’ll tell you ….. It’s not the hamburgers. It’s not the fries. And it’s not the special sauce.
Recently Dan Kennedy, one of our favorite authors and a marketing and business expert in his recent newsletter said,
“Businesses are refusing to fix the sagging foundation and termite infested structure while adding three stories of new construction on top. Pouring money or even great marketing into a leaky boat with rotting wood doesn’t solve the wood-rot. Rot will take it’s toll over time. The answer? Investment in mastery of craft and it’s details; determination to see that represented. Respect for your craft and your customer.”
A sign of “mastery in your craft” in our field is a trainer who has real clients getting real results using their methods. Show me before and after pictures and client stories and I’m listening. Until you have substantial evidence in the form of Before and Afters and real transformations you need to continue to invest in the mastery of your craft as a fitness professional.
I did this mini-and-completely-unscientific survey on my facebook page a little while ago.
Which is a better motivator for you?
1) A time-based goal e.g. a six week fat loss program – lose as much fat as possible in 6 weeks, improve your chin-up ability as much as possible in a month -
or
2) an outcome based goal e.g. lose 10lbs – be able to do ten chin-ups – in other words a specific target -regardless of how long it takes
My good friend Fraser Quelch came up with this “on the road” workout when he was recently in Shanghai at a seminar. We’ve nicknamed it “Shanghai Dangerous” — check it out!

This past weekend saw the Results Fitness crew attending the last Perform Better Summit of the 2010 season. Another amazing event with over 650 attendees, and an amazing speaker line-up.
What’s also worth pointing out is the level of attendee at the event. Over the weekend I spoke with Randy Hetrick (founder of the TRX), Peter Twist, Dan John, Sean Skahan (Anaheim Ducks), Valerie Waters, Matt Durant (University of LaVerne), Jon Chaimberg (conditioning coach to Georges St. Pierre, Rashad Evans and other top MMA competitors).
They are at the VERY top of their niche in the fitness field, and took time out of a packed schedule to attend the Perform Better event – not as speakers – just as attendees. Makes you think huh?
There are probably 100 gyms in Los Angeles within 30 miles of the event. That will mean there’s about 1000-2000 trainers. About 650 attended the Perform Better clinic. All the others didn’t need to get any smarter I guess — but those people – who need to attend the least – were right there. Goes back to my belief on the closed loop – the best get better…
QUICK PLUG to the Results Fitness team: Our entire training team were at PB this weekend. None of our supposed “competition” were there. The best fitness presenters in the World were in LA and my team were learning from them — our ‘competition’ weren’t. There’s a reason why our team are the best there is …. and the gap is widening.
On to the practical session (you’ll have to wait for the DVD of my lecture) -
This was a HUGE group so we had to do a little less than we had planned just due to space and equipment. But thanks to Polar who put heart rate monitors on several of our attendees – we still managed to see heart rates getting close to 100% of max!!
